Junior tennis players compete in Davis Cup
A team of young Lao tennis players is competing in the 2022 Junior Davis Cup and Billie Jean Cup Tennis Team Competition, which is taking place in Sri Lanka from February 12-27.
The pre-qualifying round is underway to select the first and second placed players, who will play in the final qualifying round, which will be held in Thailand.
The Lao Tennis Federation has entered Daimon Bounthala and Somphone Songbandith in the boys U-14 event, while Thilada Phommachak and Malaylak Pathoummakouronaen are taking part in the girls’ U-16 competition after being trained by head coach Alan Vuong from Australia, who gained experience at Melbourne International School.
Tennis teams from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Nepal, Malaysia, Iran, Jordan, Iraq, Cambodia and Laos are taking part in the competition.
Laos is in Group D with Jordan, Iraq and Cambodia in the round robin, while the team that comes first will go through to the next round.
On Monday, the Lao U-14 boys beat Iraq 2-1, while on Tuesday, Laos beat Cambodia 2-0.
The Lao U-16 girls have matches on February 21 and 26.
The players are supported by the President of the Lao Tennis Federation, Mr Daovone Phachanthavong, and the President of Heathfield International School, Mr Sounthone Phommachak.
