Asian nations name host countries of next four SEA Games
Officials from 11 Asian nations met in Siem Reap province, Cambodia, from April 8-10 to name the countries that will host the South East Asian (SEA) Games over the rest of this decade.
The meeting of the South East Asian Games Federation Council announced that Cambodia will host the 32nd SEA Games in 2023, Thailand will host the 33rd edition in 2025, Indonesia will host the 34th SEA Games in 2027, and Laos will host 35th edition of the games in 2029.
Among those attending the meeting were a representative of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Cambodia and a representative of Laos’ Ministry of Education and Sports, Mr Sengphone Phonamath.
It was agreed that Cambodia will arrange three groups of sports for the SEA Games next year, and will accept a vote of support from other participating countries.
Cambodia’s representative reported on preparations for publicity around the games, as well as other activities, and discussed the event with other meeting participants.
The Malaysian and Indonesian representatives gave a presentation on the martial art form pensak silat, which will be included in the games in Cambodia.
Laos supported Cambodia’s proposals concerning the SEA Games next year and gave a presentation on the martial art of wushu, which will also be included in the games.
In the run up to the games, Cambodian officials are working to keep the Covid outbreak under control and vaccinate as many people as possible so that the games run smoothly.
Following the meeting, the representatives of the 11 countries will submit reports on preparations for future SEA Games to their governments.
This year, Vietnam is hosting the 31st SEA Games from May 12-23.
Laos last hosted the SEA Games in 2009, finishing in seventh place and winning 33 gold, 25 silver and 52 bronze medals.
At the last SEA Games, held in the Philippines in 2019, Laos won 34 medals in total, including a gold medal in kickboxing.
