Teams gear up for National Games

Provinces and ministries are selecting and preparing teams to represent them at the 11th National Games, to be hosted by Xieng Khuang province in December.
Although athletes are now training for the event, preparations are hampered by budget constraints.
However, provinces and ministries plan to give cash prizes to athletes who win gold medals at the games.
Huaphan is one of many provinces currently making selections for teams that will participate in the games.
The Huameuang district education and sports office recently held competitions to select teams for the men’s and women’s petanque events, maklae, crossbow, and men’s football tournament.
After the selection process, the teams will start training for the games, which are now just two months away.
This year’s National Games will comprise 25 sports, with 18 being played in indoor venues and seven taking place in the main stadium in Xieng Khuang province and other outdoor sports grounds.
Some 460 officials are involved in the organisation of the games.
The 11th edition of the National Games is a long-awaited event after being postponed for several years because of the Covid-19 pandemic and other issues.
The 12th National Games will be hosted by Vientiane at a date to be announced, while the 10th National Games took place in Oudomxay province in 2014.
