Lao wrestling federation to train rising stars for 2023 SEA Games
The Lao Wrestling Federation will initiate a rigorous training regime for up and coming youngsters, hoping to field a strong team at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia next year.
Out of the team of seven, Lao wrestlers won two bronze medals at the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam last month.
Oloth Latsomphou was the medalist in the women’s 76kg weight category while Phonexay Phachanxay was the medal winner in the men’s 125kg weight division.
In the run up to the games, the Federation was hopeful of a gold medal in the men’s 130kg event, but had to be satisfied with the two bronze medals.
Now Lao wrestlers are looking ahead to the 11th National Games to be hosted by Xieng Khuang province in December, although the wrestling federation is up against funding challenges in staging national competitions to power up and select wrestlers for major events.
On the back of their medal wins in Vietnam, Oloth and Phonexay are now in training for the National Games and will then set their sights on next year’s SEA Games in Cambodia.
