Int’l gymnastics bodies team up to raise the bar in Laos
Members of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the Asian Gymnastics Union held talks with the Ministry of Education and Sports last week to discuss ways to improve the standard of Lao gymnasts.
Visiting Laos from September 1-3, the President of FIG, Mr Morinari Watanabe, and members of the Asian Gymnastics Union were welcomed by the Minister of Education and Sports, Associate Prof. Dr Phout Simmalavong, senior ministry officials, and the President of the Lao Gymnastics Federation, Mr Khemsath Philaphandeth.
The International Gymnastics Federation will provide support to the Lao Gymnastics Association to raise the profile of Lao gymnastics on the international stage.
The visitors watched a demonstration of gymnastics at the Lao-Japan Budo Centre in Vientiane and visited the Lao National Circus, the Physical Education College club, and a display of gymnastics at the Vientiane Center.
Interest in gymnastics has risen in Laos since female gymnasts represented the country at the South-East Asian Games in Vietnam last May.
