How should people follow their religion correctly?

International Buddhist Day on May 12 encourages people around the world to consider the value of the religion they follow, especially in light of religious conflicts around the world. On this meaningful occasion, Vientiane Times asked for people’s opinions on the best ways to pursue a religious faith.

Monk Khamtouy, Haisok temple, Chanthabouly district, Vientiane: Belief in any religion is a good thing in my opinion. There are considerable benefits to be had from following a religion and its teachings. For example, Buddha teaches that we should always choose the best path, do good things, refrain from sin, and purify our minds. This is what is taught, but it is up to individual followers as to how much they follow this guidance, which in turn determines the benefits they gain. Everyone is free to choose a religion; it depends on your personal beliefs. I think the most important things is to always try to follow the right path and to think positively when deciding which religion to follow, or to be a non-believer. Another thing that’s important is for everyone to do what it takes to live in peace and harmony. Each religion has its own teachings and principles, which all require followers to act wisely and in ways that benefit not only themselves but other people. Unfortunately, many people don’t follow these principles and then complain if they don’t benefit in some way. Even worse, some people use religion in the wrong way and as an excuse to harm others.

Mr Sonexay Chanthakhoun, a resident of Xaysettha district, Vientiane: I think everyone should follow a religion wisely and thoughtfully. Everything has both positive and negative aspects and adherence and interpretation depends on the individual. I don’t know if there is a religion or doctrine that teaches people the wrong path. Unfortunately, it seems that some people do the wrong thing because they use religion as the basis for conflict, which can have effects around the world. At present, there are many problems involving religion, which harm large numbers of innocent people. This could be because people interpret their religion in the wrong way or hold harmful beliefs. Governments should try to control such damaging actions and ensure that people do not use their religion for the wrong reasons, especially by killing others. If everyone complied with the spirit of their faith and were more tolerant, the world would be a happier place.

Ms Noy, an employee in Sisattanak district, Vientiane: There should definitely be less conflict between religious groups. I think all religions are beneficial and their teachings are helpful. It’s not good that some people interpret this guidance incorrectly or take an extreme path, and act badly in the name of their religion or their god. Some people don’t follow the guiding principles correctly and only hope to benefit from adherence, which causes problems and disputes. Too many people believe that their religion is better than others, which can also cause conflict. Unfortunately, conflict sometimes escalates into fighting and war. It would be better if people didn’t boast about their religion and tried to compete on religious grounds. Instead, they should seek to do the best they can in life.  Everyone should give careful thought to these matters and try to make the best decisions.

Mr Ouan Vongthasy, a resident of Xayaboury province:  Everyone says they love their religion and follow its teachings, but if they mean what they say they should act wisely. They should study the teachings and principles and put them into practice in daily life. They should not use them as an excuse to cause conflict and harm others. Everyone in the world, especially those who are religious followers, should realise the importance of unity and peace. They should avoid conflict and work together to maintain peace and happiness around the world. I feel sure that if believers gave greater consideration to public benefit, harmony and peace, there would be fewer problems.
