Ms Souksavan Vonnarith, a resident of Xayaboury province: I’ve read that more people in Laos are showing an interest in giving blood, especially young people. The demand for blood is high and many sick people are in need of blood each day. With some kinds of illnesses, patients need new blood frequently. And road accident victims often need blood too. So I think everyone should take note of how important giving blood is. People who are healthy should donate blood as often as possible. Every single drop of blood is valuable and will help someone in need.
Ms Vone Lamixay, an employee in Xaythany district, Vientiane: I think giving blood is very important and people who are healthy should give their blood to those in need. I know that many people worry that it’s dangerous in some way, but they are not well informed about this issue. There should be more information and publicity about blood donations and clear explanations about the benefits of donating blood. If people get more information, they will be confident about safety and more will give blood. Doctors and the authorities should do more to convince the public about the benefits of giving blood.
Mr Tui Sivilay, a government official in Sisattanak district, Vientiane: I think we should give blood as often as we can and encourage one another to do so. Many patients need blood each day, so I donate blood often. I’m happy and proud to give blood because it means I can help someone who is in urgent need, whether because of an illness or an accident. I give my blood without expecting any compensation. I like to donate because I think it’s a good way to make merit. There are no dangers or side effects from giving blood and doctors are present to monitor the process. The body quickly replenishes the blood that is taken and the amount we give is only a fraction of the total amount that circulates through our veins and arteries.
Ms Vadsana Chanthavong, a student in Vientiane: I’d like to donate blood because giving blood is like giving life. But when my blood is tested it’s not accepted. I think this is because I work at night and don’t get enough sleep. It’s very important to donate blood because many hospitals lack sufficient supplies. As we all know, our lives depend on blood. Who knows, a member of our family or a friend may need blood at any time if they have an accident. The amount of blood that is stocked for supply to hospitals depends on how many people pass the blood test; if more people pass the test, more blood is supplied. Everyone, especially healthy people, should donate blood to help others.
