How important is the work of the Public Security Force?
The Public Security Force celebrates its 61st anniversary on April 5. With events to mark the occasion taking place across the country, Vientiane Times sounded out people’s opinions on the value of the force’s work for Laos
.
Ms On, a resident of Luang Prabang province: The public security force is more developed and modern than before. On this special occasion, all citizens should thank the force for its determination to defend the country and encourage its leaders and the police to continue their great mission of protection and development. I see the security forces in action and know that they work hard to protect our country. Clearly, the force is getting stronger and is cracking down on crime, especially drug trafficking. We can sleep well and are at peace because of the strength of the security forces.
Mr Vanna, a government official in Xaythany district, Vientiane: The force has a long and fascinating history and has always worked hard to protect and develop our country. However, I would like to see the force doing more to build support at the grassroots level, as a strong network would ensure sincere and willing participation by the general public. To ensure full public participation, security personnel need to be role models, build trust, and be a force that people can rely on.
Ms Naly, a resident of Vientiane province: I think the force is the most important body in the protection of our country, enabling us to live happily and in peace and security. As we know, it is the duty of the police to provide legal protection in order to create an unbiased and just security force that people can trust to protect the interests of all members of society. We might not have such security and order if there were no police. The police work hard to tackle all forms of crime, including terrorism, transnational crime, undesirable social conduct, drug abuse, road accidents, thefts and robbery, social disturbances, financial disputes, murder, and fraud. Today the force continues to protect the nation and works with people to enhance peace and develop the country.
Ms Montha, a government official in Xayaboury province: Without doubt, the force has been very important for our country both in the past and in modern times, especially as there is more crime occurring these days. We enjoy security and live in peace and solidarity today thanks to the work of the force. The police do their best to protect our country, and work for the public. The Public Security Force is strong and smart. Compared to the past, the force is more developed and modern and has improved in every respect. However, the force should do more to suppress opponents, support the creation of a safe society, and build a strong environment that ensures peace and enables people to earn a living. Then people will appreciate its existence even more and be more supportive.
Mr Santi, a police officer in Naxaithong district, Vientiane: Life of police is not easy because besides main tasks as on serving the nation and people all the time we have also many responsibilities to do. We are working hard to do our responsibilities and to develop or units. Sometimes we have to work outside the station, stay in forest, roadside or with local villagers for a long time. In addition, there are many rules and regulations to follow. However, it isn’t too hard and I love this honourable occupation. We should continue this fine tradition. Moreover, the public should see more importance of force and realise its role. It isn’t good that some people don’t understand our tasks and role and say wrong things about force or polices.
