Where would you like to travel now that the weather is cooler?

Now that the rainy season has ended and temperatures are dropping, it’s time to think about making trips around the country. Vientiane Times asked around to find out what parts of Laos people would most like to visit.

Ms Soukphaphone, a government official in Sisattanak district, Vientiane: There are many places I would like to visit if I had the time and money. But everything is so expensive today because of economic problems, which means that many people, including me, have to save money. It would help if the government could do something to lower prices as this would make travel a more attractive prospect. People have complained about the high price of services, food and entrance fees at tourist attractions, which I think is the main reason why some people are disinclined to travel.

Ms Davan Vilayvan, a resident of Vientiane: I and my friends plan to go to Kuangsi waterfall in Luang Prabang, as well as Vat Xienthong and the scenic Ngoy district. We would then like to go to Xieng Khuang province to see the Plain of Jars and the hot springs. And then we will go camping in Anouvong district, Xaysomboun province. We hope to stay there for a few days to see the Hmong way of life and observe local traditions. It’s good for people who love nature and adventure, such as hiking and camping in the hills, as there is plenty of fresh air and lovely surroundings.

Ms Chanme Cahnthavong, an employee in Xaysettha district, Vientiane: There are many places I’d like to visit but I don’t have much money. I and my friend are thinking of going camping in Meuangfeuang or Sangthong district because it’s not too far and there’s very nice scenery. However, I’m not sure whether we will go or not because the price of petrol is so high.

Ms Done Nernthavong, an employee in Saravan province: There are many places in Laos that I want to visit. I don’t travel much so I don’t know our country very well, especially the north. I would like to visit Luang Prabang because of its cultural and historic attractions. The temples there would teach me more about religion and wellbeing, and I’d love to climb up to That Phousi for a great view of the town below.

Ms Bery Phommavong, a resident of Khammuan province: My province is quite well known because of its caves and waterfalls, and today more of these are accessible.  My favourite places are Tha Falang, Phouphamam mountain and Khounkonglaeng blue lagoon. These are great places to visit and relax. In particular, I suggest exploring Konglor cave, which is huge.

Ms Pao, a government official in Naxaithong district, Vientiane: I love travelling in Laos and feel more relaxed when I’m in the countryside. I also enjoy the towns as well. My favourite places are Luang Prabang, Oudomxay, Vangvieng, Khammuan and Pakxong. I love Pakxong because the weather and environment are so pleasant, both in the dry and wet seasons. And Pakxong has lots of waterfalls as well as coffee farms. I would like to go there again but it takes a long time by bus and air travel is expensive. But once you’re there, food, accommodation and tours are cheap.
