What do you think about mornitor scrap metal shop?
The authorities of Xaythany district, Vientiane, have found that some scrap metal businesses are not abiding by the rules and regulations of the government. Often they steal metallic goods that are either state properties or personal property. Officials have warned the dealers and also fined them. However, this practice continues unabated. Vientiane Times invited people to air their opinion on this matter.

Ms Khuanta, a resident of Sikhottabong district: I think it is good that officials are raiding the scrap metal dealers to prevent the stealth of metals, especially manhole covers, water meters, and other items which are public property. I have been witness to these things being stolen. Of course, if there are no buyers, these people will be forced to abandon this practice. It’s hard to tackle this issue as rules and regulations are not strictly enforced. I think it will be wise for the authorities to crack harder on such people and businesses. The scrap metal shops should pay more attention to the regulations and cooperate with officials to protect state property.
Mr Sisomphou Lorvanxay, a resident of Sisattanak district: I am glad that the authorities are considering this issue. I think this is a big problem and a great obstacle to the development of our country. Because the business operators do not respect the rules and regulations, people end up buying stolen material, which is often also state property. I think it will be good if the concerned sectors consider designing new equipment that is safer and which cannot be easily stolen. In addition, the public should stand guard and protect such properties.
Mr Bounnam, a resident in Xaythany district: I would like to give a million thanks to the authorities that are following up on this issue. I have seen many scrap metal shops. Many stolen items are being sold at these scrap metal shops, especially in my village. Earlier, shops did not deal in stolen goods and now almost every seller appears to be guilty. I would like to call on authorities to monitor such businesses and protect public property. The violators should be fined or punished, according to rules to make sure they do not tread on the same path again.
Mr Soulisack, an owner of a scrap metal shop in Xaythany district: I do not buy directly from people. We deal with partners and procure our stuff from them. Of course, people steal metallic goods that are state property. I can speak for myself that I have never encouraged such buying. This metal is of good quality, fetches a good price, and is targeted by many thieves. We never buy items that authorities have warned us. The authorities should pay attention and monitor the shops of foreigners too. Currently, they run this business in Laos. Another problem is that I think raids on scrap metal shops should be nationwide and not confined to some districts.
