What do you think about the parking charges at Vientiane station?

Mr Phetsamone Xayyavong, a government official in Vientiane: It’s a good thing that the rail operator is finally providing overnight parking, as this will make things so much more convenient for passengers. Hopefully the parking area will be guarded because, as we know, vehicle theft is increasingly common. It’s important that passengers feel confident about leaving their vehicle in a safe place, especially motorbikes, which are the most common targets for thieves. I hope that fees will be charged fairly. Of course, anyone running a business aims to make a profit, but charges should be set appropriately.

Ms La Khansaeng, a government official in Sikhottabong district: I think this announcement will be well received in general as everyone has complained about the lack of parking in the past, but most people will balk at having to pay 80,000 to park overnight. I think the fees are quite high. And the operator states that it will not be held responsible for any damage done to a parked vehicle. I want to know how they can charge such high prices and then not take responsibility for damage to vehicles which are supposedly under their supervision. I would like the rail operator to provide free parking instead.

Mr Tee, a resident of Hadxaifong district: I’m glad that toilets will soon be available, as this is essential when people have to queue for so long at the station to buy tickets. But I think the fee of 3,000 kip is too high. Toilets should be provided free of charge, as part of the cost of a train ticket. I look forward to the day when we can buy tickets online, as this would be much more convenient and save everyone a lot of time.

Ms Soukdavanh Xayasa, a resident of Xaythany district: I think this is good news. But I think the overnight parking fee is too high and should be reduced to 30,000 or 50,000 kip. And the drop-off and pick-up charges should be 5,000 kip for a car and 3,000 kip for a motorbike. I think these prices are more reasonable. I call on those concerned to rethink the parking fees, especially as most people who drop off passengers will not be at the station for more than five or 10 minutes. I think the fees should be adjusted to bring them in line with parking charges in other places.
