What can be done to reduce violence in society?

Physical and sexual violence is common worldwide with thousands suffering from such abuse on a daily basis. One of the prevailing beliefs in Laos is that men are the decision-makers and the ones exercising control. This perceived domination is one of the factors in the widespread and silent acceptance of sexual abuse by men. Vientiane Times asked for people’s thoughts on what could be done to change attitudes.
 
Ms Buasanith Chanthavong, a resident of Xaythany district, Vientiane: I have read about incidents of violence around the world and it’s very disturbing, especially when children and women are abused, beaten or killed. It also seems like more young people are attacking each other these days. I think this is something that families should address by trying to cultivate love and understanding. People should communicate more and show more sympathy for those who are weaker. It should be understood that men do not wield more power than women and should not seek to control them. Police officers need to do more to change attitudes and ensure that women are given more protection and support.
 
Mr Khonsavah, a government official in Huaphan province: Conflict is common in places where there are different opinions, religions and classes, while alcohol and drug use often inflame tensions. I think this problem requires more understanding. Families should do more to protect their children, and centres of education should teach students to live in harmony and to respect the rights of others. The authorities should make sure the law is enforced, that victims are given adequate support, and that abusers are brought to justice. They also need to mete out harsher punishments to offenders, to make people realise that violence is unacceptable.
 
Ms Kham Keobandid, an employee in Sisattanak district, Vientiane:  Some passions can be inflamed because of traditional beliefs and irrational ideas, and unfortunately anger is often fuelled by alcohol. The most extreme forms of belief can sometimes result in terrorism because of intolerance. People should learn to control their emotions and solve problems through reasoning rather than heated encounters. It’s important to live in peaceful coexistence, have compassion, and to trust others, as well as listening to other people’s points of view. The authorities should toughen laws against the carrying and possession of knives and firearms, and make it known that this is illegal and will incur heavy punishments.
 
Mr Huck, a resident of Xaysettha district, Vientiane: Nowadays, this issue is a big problem, with violence occurring in families, schools and close communities. Violence can include verbal or physical abuse and sexual harassment, which especially affects children and women. I think there should be a serious attempt by the authorities to curb violence and let everyone know that violence in any form is unacceptable. This responsibility should be shared by everyone, in the hope that we can wipe out violence. And the government should strengthen laws and regulations to ensure that justice is done and everyone’s rights are upheld.
