What more should be done to support young people?

One of the main strengths of a nation is its young people, but they require encouragement to fulfil their potential and acquire the skills needed to become leaders and drivers of innovation. To mark International Youth Day on August 12, Vientiane Times asked some young people how they planned to improve themselves and play a more influential role in life.

Ms Parn Xaiyasane, a government official in Xaysettha district, Vientiane: I’d like the central authorities to do more to empower and inspire young people, starting in schools, with a special emphasis on rural areas. It’s important to encourage children from a young age to build their confidence by giving them as much support as possible. If they are given encouragement, they will be more willing to learn and to broaden their knowledge. It’s vital to give children a solid grounding at the start of their life so that they develop a desire to build on these foundations. This is important not only in Laos, but all around the world. Although I have been working for some time, I still need to improve and strengthen myself so that I can contribute to my country.

Ms Daly, a student at the University of Health Sciences in Vientiane: I am focussed on my studies because I believe that education is the path to a good future and that learning never ends. Good study habits lead to discipline in other ways, and diligence is something that should be encouraged. I’m studying medicine and I’m always on the lookout for new information. I’d like to work with international experts so that I can learn a whole lot more. I hope that one day I will be an international specialist and I promise to do whatever is needed to strengthen my skills and hopefully become a professor in the future.

Ms Lod Vongphakdy, a student in Xaythany district, Vientiane: I think that acquiring new perspectives on politics and learning about the traditions and cultures of other countries is the best way for young people to flourish. There are many international organisations that work to build knowledge, capacity and understanding among young people throughout the world. The leaders of youth groups in every country should do more to help young people in rural areas get the best education possible so they can play a productive role in society. It is essential to encourage them to take part in international exchange programmes because they seldom have an opportunity to display their talents on a global stage.

Mr Keo Souvannalath, a government official in Luang Prabang province: Young people need to follow government policy if they want to have a fulfilling life. This is also key for the socio-economic development of all countries. Young people should try to create opportunities for themselves, such as by volunteering with an international organisation. This will help them gain new ideas and broaden their outlook on life, as well as being responsible citizens and improving their way of life. It would also give them the chance to make friends with people from other places or from foreign countries, which is also beneficial.
