Some Plain of Jars sites are very popular with visitors all the time

The mysterious Plain of Jars in Xieng Khunag province were carved from sandstone and granite, and their size ranges from very small to about 3.5 metres in height. They are thought to be more than 2,000 years old.
The Plain of Jars World Heritage, known locally as Thong Hai Hin, involves 11 separate places where the ancient stone jars are located in the province’s districts of Paek, Phaxay, Phoukoud and Kham.

Thong Hai Hin comprises about 80 distinct sites but Laos is including only 11 areas as they have the highest concentration of stone jars.
Some are also found in Phoukhoun district of Luang Prabang province, which borders with Xieng Khuang.
Some of the sites are not far from the nearest town but others will require a whole day to visit.
Jar site 1 in the Paek district stands apart from other sites since it is a found in a mostly flat area of Xieng Khuang’s central plain. This trait led to the name Plain of Jars for all the megalithic jar sites in Laos although the rest are mainly found on hill slopes and ridges.   
There are several sites with ancient jars in the province, but three sites in Paek district are very popular with visitors.
The first site is 15 km southwest of the provincial capital Phonsavanh in Paek district, and has about 300 jars. The second site is 25 km south of Phonsavanh and contains about 90 jars spread over two hills. The third site is 35 km southeast of Phonsavanh and has about 150 jars.
Xieng Khuang was once known as the land of unexploded ordnance because of the cluster bombs dropped by US warplanes during the Indochina War of 1964-1973, but it has now emerged as a favourite destination for domestic and foreign tourists. 
Many bombs dropped on Xieng Khuang and other Lao provinces did not explode and they are still being removed so that the areas can be redeveloped.
The town in Paek district is located in a low-lying area ringed by mountains. The large Nam Ngam Park and the new provincial stadium, which will host the National Games.
Sports fans who want to watch the 11th National Games, expected to be held in later this year, must have their Covid-19 vaccination cards in order to enter the venues.
A stadium was specially built in the province for the event and sports fans across the country have been waiting for the games since 2019, since life across the country was disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
