Delegations from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam gathered for the 6th ACMECS Senior Finance Officials’ Meeting (SFOM) in Vientiane on Wednesday to discuss strategic economic cooperation in the sub-region.
The meeting was chaired by the Director General of the External Finance Department of the Ministry of Finance of Laos, Mr Vongkhamheng Vongthachack.
The officials discussed financial cooperation among the members of the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS). Various activities and programmes funded by the development partners were also assessed and evaluated.
During the meeting, the Lao side highlighted the process of establishing ACMECS’s development fund (ACMDF) and other tools related to economic cooperation strategies.
The participants also received an update on the technical assistance being provided by development partners to develop the technicalities of the ACMDF, and discussed the ACMECS Financing Mechanism.
The ACMECS is a cooperation framework involving Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam to use the diverse strengths of member countries and to promote balanced development in the sub-region. The areas of cooperation include transport, trade and investment facilitation.
Established by Thailand in April 2003, ACMECS works to strengthen ties of traditional friendship and good neighbourliness among the five countries, and to promote cooperation for peace and prosperity in the region.
