S. Korean firm gives boost to agricultural land management

Laos has the opportunity to improve agricultural land management through the use of spatial information technology and other advanced technologies from the 3D GIS Technology Company, EGIS Co., Ltd.

Government officials and Korean company representatives gather at the opening of a training course in Vientiane on Wednesday.

The systems were introduced during a three-day competency-building training session on agricultural land management, which is taking place in Vientiane from July 13-15.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Deputy Director General of the Department of Planning and Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr Boundeth Southavilayy; Deputy Director General of the ministry’s Department of Agricultural Land Management, Dr Thatheva Saphangthong, Mr Choondong Park from Korean Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation (LX); and the Global Marketing Director of EGIS Co., Ltd, Mr Kwangse Lee.
At the start of the training programme, EGIS Co., Ltd. handed over a state-of-the-art drone to the Department of Agricultural Land Management, to be used in the training session.
The purpose of the short course is to familiarise agriculture officials with spatial information technology and the use of advanced technology based on GIS systems used in the Republic of Korea.
The state-of-the-art drone is used for land management and forest monitoring and is connected to a computer programme installed by EGIS. The drone donated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry will be used for land management and forest monitoring in the future.
EGIS representatives introduced the Korean Cadastral System and its origins, the concept of drone photogrammetry, spatial information systems, the digital twin concept and related technologies, as well as 3D spatial information and digital twin for cross sector use, including in agriculture.
Representatives from LX introduced the Korea Land Information System and its development, and use of the system in Laos.
Representatives from Samboo gave a talk on drone photogrammetry and similar technologies.
The spatial information training is considered to be a useful and informative training programme in terms of creating more efficient and systematic land management.
It is envisaged this will be achieved through infrastructure development, underground mapping, and the use of drones connected to a satellite to survey and collect data on land and weather conditions, which the government can use as a database.
Agriculture officials are not only learning about spatial information technology, but also how to save time and money.
 Dr Thattheva said “We strongly believe that the support from EGIS, LX and Samboo, who are providing this valuable educational programme, will improve agricultural land management in Laos by making it more accurate and efficient.”
